Anxiety: Waiting for Winter

Anxious for snow

With Winter approaching fast, I started to think about the impact that this winter-is-approaching time has on the psyches of mountain town residents.

This is the time of year when our way of life goes through a complete shift and everything changes: the geese are hauling ass south, flip flops are no longer the best choice of footwear for the morning commute, mud season is coming and shops are closing up for the off-season. Added together, these things create a buzz in the air, like static electricity generated by increasingly short days and colder mornings. …

Wogo Ripping

Soon enough we’ll have the first snow in the mountains, then it’ll snow near, or in, town. Regardless of the Indian summer we’ll probably get, pay attention around town and you’ll start to see “the look.”

It’s that crazed, borderline-psychotic look in every ski bum’s eye (and every professional skier and weekend warrior and even armchair skier…), look for it and you will notice it. It always hits me when I see the first ski movie premiers of the season, I see someone take a huge slasher powder turn and … aaahhhhhhh, the sweet memories come flooding back.

Maybe it’s not even the memories of good times skiing, but that feeling, that oh so nice feeling of powder choking you when you laugh at the face shot you just got, floating over rollers, bombing over cliffs, snaking through the trees, AAAHHHHH!

Everyone is starting to talk about it, some say they’re not ready and that summer was too short, while others say they can’t wait. Regardless of if you’re ready or not, it’s coming.

Since Jack Frost is coming whether we like it or not, let’s embrace the coming winter. Skiing, snowboarding, sledding … whatever may be your winter sport of choice, we’ll celebrate it, right here, right now. Here’s a list of some videos on YouTube to get you stoked. Enjoy!

I’m curious why you think the rest of the world needs another badly written blog about skiing and being a ski bum. Aren’t there enough of them already? Who cares what yet another bunch of dirtbags drank at the Moose and how sick they think their lines are? Go to a real college and do something interesting with your lives.

What constitutes a “real college?” All my friends went to reputable liberal arts colleges and/or Ivy League universities And they choose to ski sick lines, drink occasionally and enjoy this mountain lifestyle. I love my mountain town life and find it incredibly “interesting.” What do you do?

    Dingus!
Thanks for visiting the site! Sorry that you sound so bitter… Maybe you should get up from your cubicle, walk outside and take a breather. Gosh, maybe even loosen your tie a little. Boss must be riding you hard today huh? While you’re taking your little break, maybe grab a new TV guide so you find some more interesting things to do with your life.
    Best of Luck Bud!

It is my feeling that the rock skis I threw on my rack a month ago will result in the gods of nieva generously blessing the mountains with an early snow.

“grab a new TV guide” ohhh snap!

I like the way you think General Drift!

First snow of the season last night here in Tahoe. Unforunately, I’m not that optimistic for a big, Squaw winter. How’s High Mt. Heli in Jackson?

Hey Scott…Love the new site! It’s great to see your skills in action…both those you’ve learned “at a real college” and those acquired while “living an interesting life”. I’ll bet Dingusteds mother isn’t as proud as yours. Keep living life to the fullest and sharing…Mom

    Jim,
You guys had pretty good winter last year though right? Can’t say I’ve been up with High Mt. Heli, but heard good things and they take you to all good terrain!

Funny…I always thought of the Tetons as MY campus.

I’m currently working on my PHD!!!

We’ve got SNOW at our house in Big Cottonwood Canyon this morning. Salt Lake City’s Wasatch mountains are gearing up for winter. :)

Greetings from Woodland Park, CO. We saw our first snow on Pikes Peak last week. Switching from Keen Sandals to Keen Shoes…waxing up the board for what looks to be a great season. Keep up the good work.

    Jon, Jacquie and Jason,
Good to hear! We just got some snow up the hills here too!

I wish I had a Mom likes yours. Sadly, I’m stuck in my cube, but will be slaying Brownies in about 2 hours.

I’m excited for this blog. Also, thanks for getting all those trailers together: much easier than searching all over the web for them.

  • Scott says: September 27th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

Yeah, the last scott was me…which is a different scott from the other one that posted. Sorry for the confusion.

    Scott,
Glad you enjoyed ‘em. Pray for snow!
