By the year 2030, the United Nations estimates two-thirds of the world will lack access to clean drinking water.

Tapped, the newest project from Atlas Films, and in association with the Clinton Global Initiative, will illustrate the impact of the global water crisis on America and what we can do as individuals to enact change sooner rather than later. Tapped examines the role of the bottled water industry and its’ effects on our health, climate change, pollution, and our reliance on oil.
It will change the way you look at water.

Of all the plastic alternatives, Atlas films chose Klean Kanteen to outfit their crew while filming. Quite a compliment.

The Wyoming Short Film Contest is back and opening January 10, 2009 for submissions. All styles and genres are welcome including film, animation and machinima. All submissions are due on or before April 30, 2009 and must be 15 minutes or less in length. The winning filmmaker will receive $25,000 towards the budget of their next film that is made in Wyoming.

There is no entry fee, no limit on the number of submissions, and no residency restrictions to enter. The only content requirement for submissions is that the story either takes place in Wyoming, presents Wyoming as a major character in the storyline or features Wyoming in some way.

The 2008 winner of the first Wyoming Short Film Contest was David Gonzales who won for his series of five films titled “<a href="http://www.thesnaz.com/2006/07/22/get-up-stand-up/"target="_blank">Get Up Stand Up,” “Bugs,” “Nate,” “Kiting,” and “Igneous.”

“We’re proud of our contest and excited to offer it again,” said Colin Stricklin of the Wyoming Film Office. “This contest is a great way to support filmmakers and to get the message out about shooting in Wyoming.”

The Wyoming Film Office has partnered with media hosting service mDialog.com to facilitate video submissions as well as behind-the-scenes judging. Entrants are invited to upload submissions directly to the Wyoming Short Film Contest Channel on mDialog using the site’s free video compression tool called the mLoader available as a desktop application for PC or Mac or as a Safari browser plug-in.

“This year, we’re taking advantage of the advancements in video technology for the Web,” said Michell Howard, manager of the Wyoming Film Office. “By making the entire contest digital and eliminating the need to mail in DVDs and paper applications, we hope to make things easier and less expensive for filmmakers submitting to our contest.”

Last year, the contest received entries from across Wyoming and around the world including the West Coast, Canada, and as far away as South Korea.

For full contest rules and submission instructions, visit www.filmwyoming.com and click the Wyoming Short Film Contest button.

The following was sent by Forrest McCarthy, Wildlands Organizer for the Wyoming Wildnerness Association. Bring a date, some popcorn and settle in for a meaningful evening of films dedicated to promoting human-powered winter sports (backcountry skiing, Nordic skiing, snowshowing, winter hiking and camping). Here’s what Forrest has to say:

The Wyoming Wilderness Association, Friends of Pathways, and the Togwotee Pass Backcountry Alliance are hosting the Winter Wildlands Alliance’s fourth annual Backcountry Film Festival from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Snow King Grand Room here in Jackson Hole.

The festival showcases inspirational and thought-provoking films from independent grassroots filmmakers that will highlight backcountry and environmental issues, as well as entertain with exceptional skiing.

The film program is a combination of shorts and feature films. Films emphasize the pleasures of quiet, untracked snow, the excitement of steep descents and the ingenuity of wind-powered snow recreation, all captured through the unique lens of grassroots filmmakers.

Tickets are $5 at the door and include a raffle ticket. Beer will for sale. Proceeds will benefit Ski Cabin repairs and the Teton Pass Ski Ambassador Program.

For more information on the specific films, see below:

Tom Turiano: Local ski mountaineer and guide book author will begin the evening with a 30 minute photo-presentation showcasing over 20 years of backcountry skiing in the Jackson Hole region.

Hand Cut (Trailer Above): a beautifully shot, soulful film that explores the connection between a ski towns’ mining roots, and their present search for the powder they cherish more than gold. Inspiring footage is paired with a great soundtrack to create a film that is both entertaining to watch and thought provoking.

Ride It Out follows snow-kiters through miles of untracked powder and discovers the beauty and danger of an evolving sport.

My Own Two Feet is the stunning debut film by Leeward Cinema. It’s the first action sports film shot entirely using sustainable production methods. The cast and crew walked 1,200 miles and camped for 30 nights in the mountains of California and learned that with a little motivation your feet can take you to unimaginable heights.

The Pact chronicles the tragedy and recovery of an above knee amputee as he battles his way back from a devastating crash to making telemark turns.

Fast Grass and Dirty Corn is an entertainingly fun look at the lengths some hardcore Vermont locals will go to in order to make spring turns.

Editor’s Note: Come out for a worthy cause, cheap entrance fee, entertaining movies, stoke-inducing date night!

Today’s post is all about The Sky.

1. We have a trailer from Peter Pilafian’s Cable to the Sky, which documents the construction of the new 100-person aerial tram.

2. JHMR:
Get excited. The resort opens November 29, with the tram opening December 20!

If you aren’t flying high up to 10,450 feet on the new Aerial Tram this winter, then you will be left out in the cold! Go to www.tram-formation.com for the latest photos, press releases, videos and updates on tram construction and official launch details! The tram cars have arrived in Wyoming and will be hung on the cables this month.

The new Aerial Tram at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort will be twice the size of the original, carrying 100 passengers. The sleek, new cabins, and visually inspiring base terminal only add to the faster and more efficient “cable to the sky”. As well as the journey, it is the destination that captures the spirit of the Jackson Hole Tram. Soaring 4,139 vertical feet in nine minutes to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain is unrivaled in the ski industry, cresting the Tetons with an endless choice of ski routes below, not to mention incredible 360 views.

Be a part of history by entering to win a spot on the FIRST TRAM this December.

3. Open Air:
Jackson Hole Airport IS Open this Winter and Ready for Business!
A recent news story picked up by the Associated Press stated that Jackson Hole Airport may cease operations this December due to a discrepancy between local agencies. We are happy to report that Jackson Hole Airport will be open and fully operational this winter.

4. Sky Savvy:
Delta, United and American Airlines are each allowing ski and snowboard baggage to be treated as regular baggage this winter, as long as the bags weigh under 50 pounds. Delta and United Airlines are being even more progressive and allowing one ski (or snowboard) and one boot bag combined to count as ONE checked bag. (Read More Here.) The combined weight of both bags may not exceed 50 pounds, so let’s hope that if you are bringing your own equipment rather than checking out the latest Demos and Rentals at Jackson Hole Sports, your equipment is super light. … Or, just bring your boots and rent the rest!

In addition to skiing for Cloudveil, Lisa Watson is the communications manager at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Irena Salina’s award-winning documentary investigation into what experts label the most important political and environmental issue of the 21st Century – The World Water Crisis.

Interviews with scientists and activists intelligently reveal the rapidly building crisis, at both the global and human scale, and the film introduces many of the governmental and corporate culprits behind the water grab, while begging the question “CAN ANYONE REALLY OWN WATER?”

Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies, which are fast becoming blueprints for a successful global and economic turnaround.

What: A High Def Snowboard Film from locals Travis Rice and Curt Morgan
When: 6:30 and 8:30 Saturday Sept. 13
Where: Center for the Arts in Jackson
Bonus: Benefits JH Ski & Snowboard Club
Tickets: On Sale Now online at the Center for the Arts or by phone at 307.733.4900
Double Bonus: After Party at 43 North. Tickets at Front Street Productions

This HD epic, two years in the making, follows Rice’s last vid: the popular Community Project.

Snowboarder Mag hails That’s It That’s All as best skiing/boarding film to date: “This production is so ballin’ that it has heli follow cams of heli’s follow camming, and it has a lot of them … it appears as though Travis will be much more the focus of the film than in the latter offering, and that is a good thing. Travis’s double corking madness needs to be seen to be believed. Director Kurt Morgan has captured the gnarliness of Rice and has come as close to bringing as much to the shooting from behind the lens as Rice does in front. I’m sure these teasers will be in heavy circulation on the web in no time.”

DO NOT MISS THIS JACKSON HOLE PREMIERE!

One more mini teaser of the movie of which one snowboarder asked: Is this a National Geographic movie or snowboarding?
